Unknown thugs have gone on rampage to vandalize water meters on the Nabweya Gravity Flow Scheme project in bududa district.

The thugs have vandalized meters from the villages of Nasawali, Namatiti, Namusilo, namalhuli, Bunamono and kanzu in Bukibino parish in Bukibino Sub County.

According to the LC one chairperson Kanzu village, over 15 meters were reported to have been stolen adding that this is not the first time such an incident has happened.

“About 15 meters were stolen, we are scared this vice may continue and what am certain about is that the people involved are from within because we don’t expect anyone from out of the district to commit such an act, these people are connected and they have market for the meters” the chairperson said.

He said that the vandalized water project had saved the community a burden of looking for water from distant areas.

This incident has thrown many of the local residents in fear noting that if this is not curtailed early, the vice may spread across the district and may deter governments’ efforts of offering people safe and clean water at their doorstep.

“People came in the night while we were asleep” one of the community members said.

Magameso William, the technical supervisor Nabweya Gravity flow scheme appealed to the public to be vigilant and urged them to collaborate with police to arrest the criminals noting that those who committed the crime are from within the community.

He said the vandalism has affected the flow of water to all parts of the affected area.

“There is a cutoff of water to the entire sub county where there was vandalism, I appeal to the community to be vigilant and help us apprehend the criminals” he said.
