The Vatican, officially known as Vatican City State, is an independent city-state enclaved within Rome, Italy. It serves as the spiritual and administrative center of the Roman Catholic Church and is the residence of the Pope. Covering an area of approximately 44 hectares (110 acres), it is the smallest internationally recognized independent state in the world by both area and population. The Vatican is known for its religious and cultural significance, housing significant art, architecture, and historical sites, including St. Peter’s Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums. The governance of Vatican City is conducted by the Pope, and it operates as a theocratic absolute monarchy.
