Kasese farmers tipped on value addition and sales

By John Bwambale

Coffee farmers in Kasese District have been encouraged to add value and maintain the crop in order to attain good prices from international buyers.

The information was revealed by Clovis Kalengutsa Thembo, a long-time coffee farmer and the Chairperson of the Board of Directors for Mubuku Integrated Farmers Association (MIFA), while addressing Kiruli Coffee farmers at St Mark C.O.U in Maliba Sub County. He said farmers should ensure advanced planting and proper management of harvested coffee to attract good prices for the crop.

Kalengutsa further stated that Mubuku Integrated Farmers Association has pledged to support coffee farmers in Busongora North with 10 million shillings to boost farming, in addition to the 20kg that farmers will collect.

He indicated that Kasese District is ranked among the top districts in the country for coffee production, and it should be every farmer’s obligation to add value to the crop.

Edson Matte, a coffee farmer, appreciated the idea, saying it will help many of them earn money and meet their family needs such as school fees, medication, and food, among others.

However, Pauline Bwambale, the Chairperson of MIFA Kiruli branch, highlighted the need for agricultural officers to provide guidance on the treatment of pests and diseases that attack the crop.

Kalengutsa had earlier challenged the public against the tendency to wait for free services and money, urging them to work hard to earn a living.
