Uganda Launches AFCON 2027 Host Bid

In a momentous event held at State House, Entebbe, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, along with First Lady Mama Janet Kataha Museveni and the Minister of Education and Sports, officially unveiled Uganda’s ambitious bid to host the prestigious African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the prospect of hosting AFCON in 2027, President Museveni emphasized the importance of striking a balance between sports and other income-generating activities, particularly for the youth. While recognizing the numerous benefits of sports, including promoting good health and fitness, he urged young people not to neglect other avenues for financial empowerment.

President Museveni further underscored the role of sports as a source of entertainment, highlighting that engaging in sporting activities and being avid spectators offer a healthier alternative to engaging in negative behaviors or excessive socializing at bars. By hosting the AFCON, Uganda would not only provide a platform for top-class football but also create an avenue for quality entertainment and social engagement.

Moreover, President Museveni recognized the broader implications of hosting AFCON in terms of promoting the East African region. He acknowledged that the collaborative effort of East African nations to host this esteemed tournament would contribute significantly to showcasing and publicizing the region, in addition to boosting tourism prospects. Echoing the President’s sentiments, the First Lady, Mama Janet Kataha Museveni, emphasized the bid’s potential to strengthen the existing cordial relations between East African countries.
